3rd Annual Valentine’s Family Festival

February 12, 2012 12-5pm

Beneficiaries:

Northern Youth Project (NYP) is a group of local teens and supporting community members who plan and execute projects for youth ages 12-21 from Abiquiú, El Rito, Gallina and Medanales. Our projects encourage community involvement, leadership, and creativity. Through our projects we aim to bridge cultures and generations and better the outcomes for youth in our area. Our current goal is to raise enough money to build our own youth center on land that has already been donated to us by Tres Semillas, our fiscal sponsor. Tres Semillas is a 501(c)3 foundation dedicated to positive community development and growth.

Every year NYP youth do amazing things. Each season, they plan, plant, and cultivate a heritage-inspired community garden using both traditional and modern agricultural techniques. They make art with a purpose, whether it be conveying a social message, like our Monster Truck float, literally a truck turned into a monster using over 900 recycled cans, salvaged building materials, and plastic grocery bags, or preserving traditional arts of the region, like making retablos. This year the teens will expand on their traditional arts experience, by introducing metal work and pottery, as well as make retablos using traditional homemade pigments, all under mentorship of local artists. Youth are also planning a roadside cleanup day, a charity walk-a-thon, and will help again at National Lands Day.

We hope to have a fully sustainable center established in the next two years, but will continue our teen-centered programs regardless. We hope to create jobs for local teens and adults by providing teaching opportunities, technology development, entrepreneurial training, and leadership experience.  Most of all we are committed to providing a safe and healthy place for teens to be themselves and grow. NYP youth are empowered to be the change in their community and take charge of their own future. We as a community are here to help them, but it is together we make the biggest difference. Boys & Girls Club del Norte (BGCDN) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit youth development and support organization operating two afterschool program sites on the campuses of the Chimayó and Abiquiú Elementary schools in Northern New Mexico. We are the only afterschool programs offered in each of these rural communities. Our mission is to enable young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Established in 2002, this year marks our 10th Anniversary. Our organization serves children and families in Chimayó and Abiquiú with these core programs: Power Hour & Project Learn - provides homework help and high yield learning, Healthy Habits & Triple Play - provides nutrition and fitness education, Club Tech - computer literacy and Arts & Leadership- opportunities for self expression and responsibility. Our Chimayo site recently completed a 6 week media literacy project with Youth Media Project. The culmination of this project is a short 10 minute video of Chimayo from the eyes of our children available on our website at www.bgcdelnorte.org.

Even more than money, we hope to raise awareness of our vital organizations and strengthen the sense of community in our area. The event is also a learning experience for the hosting youth. This event offers youth an opportunity to exercise organizing skills, presentation skills, responsibility and hard work. This kind of hands-on learning is priceless.
